Nelson Mandela
Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan
in the village of Mvezo, South Africa, on July 18, 1918 and died on December 5,
2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He got the nickname Nelson from a teacher
in school when he was seven years old. Mandela was a civil rights activist, a
lawyer and the president of South Africa from May 10, 1994 to June 14, 1999. He
fought against Apartheid, a system where non-white citizens were segregated and
did not have the same rights as white citizens. Mandela dreamed of a democratic
and free society where people had equal rights and opportunities. Mandela got
his law degree at University of Witwatersrand, where he met some activists that
were also against Apartheid. Nelson Mandela became a leader in the African
National Congress (ANC). In 1962, he was arrested because he led the anti-Apartheid
movement and was accused of conspiring to overthrow the State. The South African
government accused him of terrorism and sent him to prison for 27 years. Mandela
was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 because he ended the Apartheid system.
He continued his eff orts to end Apartheid until all citizens of all races were
allowed to vote in the 1994 election. Mandela Day is held annually on July 18.
In this day, people devote 67 minutes to help others, one minute is counted for
every year Mandela served his country.
