 A talk with the doctor

Mr. Keith Smith is having an appointment with Dr. Judith Thompson, an ear, nose and throat specialist.
Judith: What's going on with you, Mr. Smith?
Keith: I've been snoring lately, Dr. Thompson, and this has been an unpleasant thing to my wife.
Judith: Has your wife told you about your snoring or have you woken up with apnea?
Keith: Apnea? What is this?
Judith: It's a temporary absence or a cessation of breathing. Have you had this during your sleep?
Keith: Yes, once in a while, yes.
Judith: Curious... Everything seems absolutely normal. Have you had changed your habits recently?
Keith: Well, I've been eating more than usual at dinner time. That has increased my weight in six kilos.
Judith: Hmmmm... Obesity, enlarged tonsils, chronic nasal congestion, and congenital physical abnormalities are the possible causes of snoring.
Keith: Do you think I'm an obese person? Not yet, but you've got to be careful. What do you mean?
Judith: Try to reduce your eating impulses and keep a uniform diet. Your weight will decrease and the snoring will probably disappear in a few weeks. If the symptoms persist, I will ask for an X-ray of your face.
Keith: Do I have to take any medicine?
Judith: I won't prescribe you any medicine.
Keith: Oh, thank God it's nothing serious. Thank you, Dr. Thompson.
Judith: Don't mention it.

Sightseeing in London - Passeio em Londres

“We've been to Buckingham Palace for the Changing of the Guard,
We've walked as far as Trafalgar Square
To see the two art-galleries there;

And now you suggest that before it's dark
We should visit the Zoo in Regent's Park!
When tubes and buses are tightly packed
And I am feeling completely whacked!
Do you realise, Henry darling, that we've had no lunch or tea?
And these fashionable sandals are nearly killing me!
So, unless you find a café for a coffee and a snack,
Though we left home only yesterday, I'll catch the next train back!”

 The ruins of Troy

Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890), a German merchant w had become a millionaire by the age of 36, discovered the ruins Troy in 1873. Since his childhood the story of the City and its war had fascinated him, as told by the Greek poet, Homer, in the Iliad (‘Ilium’ was another name for Troy)
In the mid 1800s many scholars thought the Iliad was fiction, but
Schliemann believed exactly the contrary. As he was studying the text, he came to the conclusion that the site was in northwestern Turkey, in Hissarlik. After he had dug there for months he found the ruins not of one City, but of nine, each built on the ruins of the previous one, forming nine layers. When excavations had finished, he could gather treasures of gold, silver and jewelry
Schliemann had imagined that Homer’s Troy was layer IX (2200 BC), but archeologists discovered later that it was layer VII, a smal1 fortified city, destroyed by fire and violence in 1200 BC, just as the Iliad recounts.

 The Native American cultures

In 1492, Christopher Columbus called (named) Indians the first natives he encountered on the island of Hispaniola, believing (supposing) he had reached (contacted) the East Indies.
The original Indian settlers (colonizers) that inhabited what now is the United States arrived (entered) tens of thousands of years ago from Southeast Asia, probably across the Bering Strait (see the map) at the end of the Ice Age (period). They themselves gradually dispersed over the North and South American continents.
They formed small bands (groups: 20-50 elements), but some tribes had 1,000 people or more. The Indians that lived (reside) in the western coastal area were mainly (principally) fishers. The Great Plains Indians such as the Cheyenne, the Sioux and the Apaches were basically hunters (caçadores). The eastern Indians belonged to tribes of 30,000 inhabitants. The southeastern tribes such as the Cherokees and the Natchez received a deep (profound) influence from the highly (extremely) developed Aztec civilization.

 A MOTHER IN DOUBT

Dear Mr. Clover,
My daugther Laura tries to study English every day. But she never learns it well. Do you think that she has a bad memory for languages?
Aretha Thompson.

Dear Mrs. Thompson,
I don´t think Laura has a bad memory for languages. She is a bright student. Maybe your daughter lacks interest or she doesn´t like the subject for one reason or another. Perhaps she is studying at a wrong time of the day. You say that she “tries to study”. Why doesn´t she really study? I mean, study and not try to.
Sometimes people pretend to study, but unconsciously they don´t pay attention to what they are doing. Ask Laura to talk to her teacher before it is late.
Ken Clover (coordinator)

UMA MÃE COM DÚVIDA
Prezado Sr. Clover,
Minha filha Laura tenta estudar inglês todo dia.

Talvez ela esteja estudando no horário errado do dia.

Seeds of Speech - Sementes do discurso (da fala) - Unit 4 of Compact English Book.

Seeds of speech

In the near future, 1.5 billion people – a quarter of the world’s population - will speak English. For 1.1 billion, it will a second or third language. English is rapidly becoming a language for business, science and popular culture. Three quarters of the world's mail and 80% of the electronic mail on the Internet use English.
There aren't linguistic reasons for this global dominance of English. The grammar is difficult, the pronunciation eccentric, and the spelling peculiar. Maybe the reason is the flexibility of the English language which incorporates words from more than 150 different languages.
As English spreads across Australia, Asia and Africa, it will invariably be transformed - even subverted. Perhaps English will fragment into different languages as Latin fragmented into French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and other languages 1,500 years ago.
